Grounded Care for Movement Work in the 805 (Ventura County, CA)

Movement chaplains offer spiritual and emotional care in the midst of movement work, grounded presence that supports people and communities doing justice work in complex systems shaped by white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Immigrant, colonization, and other forms of harm.

We are multi-faith and spiritually-rooted. We accompany people of any faith or no faith. Our care is consent-centered and trauma-aware: no forcing prayer, no assumptions about belief, and no spiritual bypassing.

What guides our practice

  • Center those most impacted

  • Consent, dignity, and confidentiality

  • Care that resists burnout culture and honors rest

  • Accountability and ongoing learning

What We Do

  • Offer grounded presence, listening, and emotional/spiritual support (as wanted and consented to)

  • Provide accompaniment and witness during actions, vigils, protests, and rapid response

  • Share tools, practices, and simple rituals for resilience and tending grief

  • Support de-escalation, mediation, and relational care during moments of intensity

  • Coordinate non-medical support before, during, and after nonviolent direct action

Our approach is shaped by combined wisdom, experience, and training. We have learned from the Minnesota and Twin Cities Movement Chaplains, Faith Matters Daring Compassion Movement Chaplaincy training, and Trauma Response and Crisis Care for Movement Healers training.

We are a volunteer interfaith network. We are not a crisis hotline, not medical providers, and not a substitute for emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical help, contact local emergency services.

For safety, we do not publish chaplain identities, action locations, or event details.

We confirm specifics privately after we confirm fit and capacity.

Our Logo

Our logo reflects the land, the people, and the movements of Ventura County, the 805.

The monarch butterfly honors migrant dignity and the sacred right to move. It carries the stories of Dreamers, farmworkers, and families whose labor sustains Ventura County’s fields and whose resilience sustains our communities.

The mountains and ocean ground us in Ventura County, on the land of the Chumash people, who are still here. We honor their enduring presence and stewardship, and we recognize that care for community includes care for land, water, and truth.

The rising sun reminds us that every day we begin again. After the Borderline shooting, wildfire seasons, after smoke and loss, after displacement and rebuilding, healing is practiced in community. It rises with the morning.

The circle holds us together across faiths, across differences, across movements. It creates space for belonging, accountability, and shared care.

805 means we are here, rooted in this place, in its fields and shorelines, in its recovery and resilience, committed to showing up with grounded presence.
